GA4 checker

This check looks at what your homepage sends to Google Analytics 4. It flags setups with more than one property, retired Universal Analytics tags, and repeated page views.

What this checks

What the check looks at on one homepage load.

Each item is something the scan records from the browser or reads from your published Tag Manager container.

Whether GA4 is present

The check looks for GA4 requests during the homepage load. If none appear, analytics may be missing, or a consent banner may be holding it back.

How many properties load

It counts the distinct GA4 properties the page sends data to. More than one can split your data across properties.

Repeated page views

It counts GA4 page view requests on the load. Repeats can inflate page view and session totals.

Old Universal Analytics tags

It checks for a Universal Analytics tag still loading on the page. A retired tag like that is worth finding and removing.

Failed requests and purchase details

It notes GA4 requests that did not succeed, and GA4 purchase tags in Tag Manager set up without a transaction ID, value or currency.

What the results mean

How to read a result.

Each result says what the check saw. Some are information, and some are gaps to fix. The gaps from this check are listed first, then any other gaps the scan found.

Repeated GA4 page view requests

GA4 received the same page view more than once on one load, so page view totals can be inflated.

Requests observed for more than one GA4 property

The page sends data to more than one GA4 property. Confirm which one your reports should use.

A retired Universal Analytics tag still loads

An old tag is still on the page. Remove it, or confirm that nothing depends on it.

No analytics detected

No analytics requests were seen on the homepage load. Check the banner first, since it can hold tags back.

Some GA4 requests are failing

Some requests to GA4 did not succeed, so some data may not arrive.

How to fix it

Common fixes for what this check reports.

Each one is a change to your site or your tag setup. Your team decides how to make it.

  • Use one GA4 property per site

Keep one measurement ID in your site setup, or make a second property a deliberate choice that someone owns.

  • Remove old Universal Analytics tags

Look for Universal Analytics tags in the site code and in Tag Manager, and delete them.

  • Fix repeated page views

Check for two tags that each send a page view, and keep only one.

  • Send transaction details on purchase

Include a transaction ID, value and currency on each purchase event.

Limits

What this check can’t see.

The limits of one homepage load, so you can read the result correctly.

  • One homepage load on desktop, from one region. The check does not sign in or move through the site.
  • It cannot see events that happen later in a visit, such as sign-ups or purchases, because it does not click through the site or submit forms.
  • It cannot see your GA4 reports, such as traffic totals or filters.
  • Server-side GA4 data is not visible to a browser.

Other free checkers

Check the rest of your tracking.

The other free checks run the same scan and list the gaps for their own topic first.

Consent Mode v2 checker

Consent Mode tells Google tags what a visitor agreed to. This check reads the consent signals your homepage sends and flags setups that leave out the v2 settings or set the default too late.

Cookie consent checker

Many sites load ad and analytics tags as soon as the page opens. This check loads your homepage once and records what fires before any choice is made on the banner.

Cookie banner reject test

A Reject button should stop optional tracking. This check clicks Reject on your homepage in a separate pass and records what keeps running afterwards.

Meta Pixel checker

A Meta Pixel that loads twice, or sends the same page view twice, can inflate the numbers Meta reports. This check counts what your homepage sends to Meta and shows where the Pixel is set up more than once.

Google Ads conversion checker

A Google Ads conversion only counts if a tag sends it to Ads. This check reads how your conversions are set up in your published Tag Manager container and whether they are sent to Google Ads.

Personal data tracking checker

Ad and analytics tags sometimes send personal details inside page addresses or request data. This check looks for categories, such as an email field, and never stores the values. It is built with healthcare and banking sites in mind, but any site can run it.

Google Tag Manager checker

This check reads the published Tag Manager container your homepage loads. It looks at how the container is set up, not only at what reaches the browser.

Lead form attribution checker

When a visitor clicks an ad and fills in a form, the campaign details have to survive the trip. This check follows links to your lead pages and looks for the fields that carry them.

FAQ

GA4: common questions.

Answers to the questions we hear most about this check.

Is this checker free?
Yes. Enter your website and the scan loads your live site and reports what it finds. You see the verdict and how many gaps it found right away; enter a work email to see each gap and what it means.
What does the GA4 checker look at?
It loads your homepage once in a browser and records the requests sent to Google Analytics 4. It does not read your GA4 reports.
Why would my site send to two GA4 properties?
Often a tag was added at one time and never removed. The check reports it so you can confirm which property is intended.
Is Universal Analytics still a problem?
The check flags any Universal Analytics tag that still loads, so you can decide whether to remove it.
Does this check see my purchases?
No. It does not complete a purchase. It can only see what loads on the homepage.
