Google Ads conversion checker

A Google Ads conversion only counts if a tag sends it to Ads. This check reads how your conversions are set up in your published Tag Manager container and whether they are sent to Google Ads.

What this checks

What the check looks at on one homepage load.

Each item is something the scan records from the browser or reads from your published Tag Manager container.

Conversion in the container

The check looks for a configured tag that matches your conversion goal. If none matches, that conversion may never be sent.

Conversion sent to Ads

It separates conversions that reach Google Ads from ones that only reach analytics. A goal can be set up for GA4 and still never reach Ads.

Value, currency and transaction ID

Purchase conversions need a value, a currency and a transaction ID. Without a transaction ID, a repeated purchase can count twice.

Enhanced Conversions

The check reports when Enhanced Conversions is off for a Google Ads setup. That feature adds hashed first-party customer data to help match conversions to ad clicks.

Duplicate conversion tags

Some conversion tags may be set to fire more than once for the same action. The check flags them when it sees them.

What the results mean

How to read a result.

Each result says what the check saw. Some are information, and some are gaps to fix. The gaps from this check are listed first, then any other gaps the scan found.

No configured tag matched the conversion goal

The container has no tag for the goal the check looked for. If you track it somewhere else, that tracking is not in Tag Manager.

Conversion matches GA4 tags but not Ads tags

The goal is tracked for analytics, but no Google Ads tag sends it. Ads will not record it as a conversion.

Purchase conversions carry no transaction ID

Without a transaction ID, the same purchase sent twice may be counted twice.

Google Ads conversions set up without Enhanced Conversions

Enhanced Conversions is off for this setup. This is an option to review, not a fault.

Some conversions are set up to be sent more than once

Two or more tags are set to fire for the same conversion. Keep one tag per goal.

How to fix it

Common fixes for what this check reports.

Each one is a change to your site or your tag setup. Your team decides how to make it.

  • Add a conversion tag for each goal

Create a Google Ads conversion tag for each goal in Tag Manager, using the conversion ID and label from your Ads account.

  • Send transaction IDs

On each purchase, pass the order number as the transaction ID so Ads can remove repeats.

  • Turn on Enhanced Conversions if it fits

Enhanced Conversions needs hashed customer data and the customer data terms Google requires. Accept those terms and follow Google’s setup steps before turning it on.

  • Remove duplicate tags

Keep one conversion tag per goal. Check that a page-level tag and a container tag are not both firing for the same action.

Limits

What this check can’t see.

The limits of one homepage load, so you can read the result correctly.

  • One homepage load on desktop. The check does not follow a purchase or submit a lead form, so thank-you pages are out of view.
  • It reads the Tag Manager configuration. It does not read Google Ads reporting, so it cannot say whether your conversions are counting.
  • Server-side and offline conversions are not visible to a browser.
  • A consent banner can hold conversion tags back. A conversion that does not appear may be gated by consent.

Other free checkers

Check the rest of your tracking.

The other free checks run the same scan and list the gaps for their own topic first.

Consent Mode v2 checker

Consent Mode tells Google tags what a visitor agreed to. This check reads the consent signals your homepage sends and flags setups that leave out the v2 settings or set the default too late.

Cookie consent checker

Many sites load ad and analytics tags as soon as the page opens. This check loads your homepage once and records what fires before any choice is made on the banner.

Cookie banner reject test

A Reject button should stop optional tracking. This check clicks Reject on your homepage in a separate pass and records what keeps running afterwards.

Meta Pixel checker

A Meta Pixel that loads twice, or sends the same page view twice, can inflate the numbers Meta reports. This check counts what your homepage sends to Meta and shows where the Pixel is set up more than once.

GA4 checker

This check looks at what your homepage sends to Google Analytics 4. It flags setups with more than one property, retired Universal Analytics tags, and repeated page views.

Personal data tracking checker

Ad and analytics tags sometimes send personal details inside page addresses or request data. This check looks for categories, such as an email field, and never stores the values. It is built with healthcare and banking sites in mind, but any site can run it.

Google Tag Manager checker

This check reads the published Tag Manager container your homepage loads. It looks at how the container is set up, not only at what reaches the browser.

Lead form attribution checker

When a visitor clicks an ad and fills in a form, the campaign details have to survive the trip. This check follows links to your lead pages and looks for the fields that carry them.

FAQ

Google Ads conversion: common questions.

Answers to the questions we hear most about this check.

Is this checker free?
Yes. Enter your website and the scan loads your live site and reports what it finds. You see the verdict and how many gaps it found right away; enter a work email to see each gap and what it means.
Does this check confirm my Google Ads conversions are counting?
No. It checks how conversions are set up in Tag Manager and what the homepage sends. It does not read your Google Ads reports.
What is a transaction ID?
It is a unique order number sent with a purchase. Google Ads uses it to spot the same purchase sent twice.
Do I need Enhanced Conversions?
Not always. The check reports it as information. Enhanced Conversions adds hashed customer data to help match conversions to ad clicks.
Why does my GA4 goal show no Google Ads match?
A goal can be sent to GA4 without any Google Ads conversion tag. The check reports that gap.
